To start my Writers Write series I’m thrilled to introduce you to Tori Eldridge.
What’s Writers Write? One question. One writer each week.
The question is: What’s your best craft advice?
Thank you to Tori for starting us off!
What’s your best craft advice? from Tori Eldridge
My best craft advice? Write about something that has personal meaning for you at this stage in your life. This way, you will feel motivated and passionate about every stage of your book’s journey through research, writing, and promotion as well.
I say this stage of your life, because the focus of your attention can, will, and probably should change. What concerned and interested me in my twenties is very different than what concerns and interests me now.
What captures your attention could be related to family, identity, relationships, or work. It might be a topic, place, or activity you’re dying to explore, or a social issue you want to illuminate or dissect. You might be inspired to share your heritage, community, or homeland as I did in KAUA‘I STORM. Or you might want to dive deeply into an expertise or a profession as I did with the ninja martial arts in my Lily Wong thrillers.
Passion fuels creation.
Passion will sustain your focus, energy, and commitment.
Passion can be felt when written well on the page.
Whether intimate in nature or of global importance, if you write a story that has personal meaning for you—a story inspired by your passion—your words will not only impact your readers, it will enrich and empower you.
Tori Eldridge is the bestselling author of KAUA‘I STORM, the first book in the Ranger Makalani Pahukula Mysteries, as well as a two-time Anthony Award nominee, Lefty and Macavity Awards finalist, and winner of the 2021 Crimson Scribe Award for Best Book of the Year for her Lily Wong mystery thriller series—THE NINJA DAUGHTER, THE NINJA’S BLADE, THE NINJA BETRAYED, and THE NINJA’S OATH. Born and raised in Honolulu—of Hawaiian, Chinese, and Norwegian descent—Tori lived in New York and Los Angeles before settling in Portland, Oregon, where her mo‘opuna (grandchildren) live. Before writing, Tori performed on Broadway, television, and film; and holds a 5th degree black belt in To-Shin Do ninja martial arts.
